Ignition

The lightning strike which caused the damage is captured here on a video tape image taken by Const. T. Cox of the Ontario Provincial Police. Const. Cox was parked approximately 3.5 miles south of the refinery, using his in-car surveillance camera to video the storm.

The bolt, measured at 30,599 amps, made a direct strike on the tank roof. In a ten minute time frame (5 minutes before & after this strike), this storm produced 47 strikes within a 5 mile radius, the largest of which was measured at over 122,000 amps.

Within seconds, the initial glow of the fire can be seen behind the trees in the lower right corner of the picture.

Precise information on the lightning strike was obtained from

Tuscon, Arizona.
